My Favourite Chocolate Chip Cookie Gift Jar

December 6, 2019

Time to Prepare Jar: 10 minutes

This is one of my favourite make ahead tricks.  I’ll prepare 3-4 jars at once and keep in my cupboard for a quick homemade treat, a last minute hostess gift or to give away around the holidays.   The recipe is easy enough for kids to make as well!

Ingredients for 1 jar:

·       2/3 cup whole wheat flour (to make it Gluten free you can use Buckwheat flour - see notes below)

·       1/2 teaspoon baking soda

·       1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

·       1/4 teaspoon salt

·       1/3 cup brown sugar, packed

·       1/3 cup granulated sugar

·       1 1/2 cups quick oats

·       3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (For a dairy free option use dairy free chocolate chips - see notes below)

·       1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:

Add all ingredients into a large mason jar in the listed order, gently shaking the bottle to settle the ingredients after each addition.

Write on the top of the lid with a sharpie or create a lovely tag and tie on with a ribbon: Add ½ cup softened butter, 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla.  Mixture will be dry. Use a large soup spoon to form balls and press down lightly. Bake 350 degrees F, 8-10min on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

Notes:

  • Gluten Free: If you use Buckwheat flour, you will need to add 2 eggs instead of 1 egg to help them stick together. They are delicious and the extra protein is a bonus.

  • Dairy Free: For dairy free cookies you can use dairy free chocolate chips (‘Enjoy Life’ is a common brand found at most grocery stores) and softened coconut oil in place of the butter.
